Farmers' Markets have never been more popular. The number of local markets across the country selling fresh produce and other goods has exploded from 1,755 in 1994 to about 4,400 today.
Shoppers surveyed in a University of Nebraska survey rated taste and quality, followed by nutrition and price as their reasons for choosing locally grown produce. Those buying meats from local producers cited food safety and quality as their top reasons for shopping at a farmers' market.
"Knowing where your food is coming from has become increasingly important since 9/11," says Jerry Jost with the Kansas Rural Center. Food safety and security is tied to homeland security and among the reasons given for purchasing locally grown foods. Jost credits local markets with linking people with agriculture and what he calls, "bringing the community to the table."
Shopping at farmers' markets can also provide social opportunities to visit with friends and neighbors and meet new people, while sampling local culture in an enjoyable atmosphere, says Jost. Regular shoppers can take advantage of the opportunity to get to know local growers and vendors, increasing their confidence in the quality of goods they buy. In turn, many vendors help educate their customers by providing tips for choosing, using and storing fresh foods.
Jost points out farmers' markets are attracting more people by selling a wider selection of products. Many markets now offer baked goods, arts and crafts, bedding plants, cut flowers and seasonal decorations.
